I Am Not My Own – Romans 14:8

Romans 14:8

8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.

I have been a Christian since I was young. I grew up in a home where I watched my Mom live out her faith daily, which is one of the main reasons I enjoy a daily walk with the Lord. Memories of my Mom studying her Bible and of Sundays at church fill me, but memories of doctrine or theology I don’t have.

One of the things that first drew me to a “Reformed” church was that the members all seemed to be so sure of their doctrine, and knew exactly why they believe and what they believed. In many Reformed churches, a significant amount of time in Sunday School with little ones is still spent teaching the teanants of the faith, based on Bible teaching and familiarizing the kids with the Creeds and Catechisms.

I have felt the nudging of the spirit to teach these to my own children now, while they are still at home. So, you should see a shift in the coming days to a focus on looking a bit deeper into these historical documents so rich in purpose and meaning. My studies may skip around a bit more than they have before, but they will be based on the creeds. The first one I will look at is the Heidelberg Catechism. If you have not read it before, I encourage you to do so. It is an amazing document.

I love Question and Answer One perhaps the most of all. . .what is my only comfort in life and in death? That I am not my own.

I belong to my father, no matter what. I have a plaque hanging in my home with this on it, and it really does comfort me so very much. Why do I follow Christ? Why can I overcome all evil and each difficulty? Why do I have hope in a future beyond this life? Because I am not my own, in life and in death I belong to my heavenly father.

Father, thank you for the faith of those who have gone before me. Thank you for a rich Christian heritage, from Adam on down to my own parents. Help me to pass the torch on to my children and they their children, that generations of Christ followers would spring up and carry on, bringing many to you.  Help us each to glorify you in all we do

  1. Your post on this day is very interesting to me, On the 28th May I felt the spirit stir in my spirit, and the phrase “I am not my own” came with that stirring. It has been with me all week, to the point I wanted more scripture reference to it. Jer 10:22-24. And then I decided to search google that phrase and you came up, and your post on the 29th that just happens to be my birthday. Interesting enough I plan to communicate to the church I lead in Western Australia, this very thought. Thanks for the link to the Catechism. Great stuff. Interesting how the spirit speaks – spirit to spirit. Blessings. Adam
